Business Advisor/Engagement Officer
Reporting to the General Manager, the Business Advisor is responsible for developing, promoting and delivering business advice and other related services of Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation (“SLBDC”), in person and in a virtual manner, as well as by utilization of SLBDC social media channels.
As part of a collaborative team, the Business Advisor will contribute to the effectiveness of the organization, positive staff morale and high-performance teamwork.
Promotion of the services of SLBDC by cultivating referrals and networking with entrepreneurs, influencers, other referral sources, business partners, including other business lenders and business advisors to maintain a high profile for the organization.
Proactive provision of business advice services to the Lambton County business community to help attract and establish new businesses and to assist with expansion of existing businesses, with documentation of interactions by creation of electronic files with all pertinent information for each client, maintained according to SLBDC standards, in shared network and using FERN Faasbank software program.
Comply with SLBDC PIPEDA and Information Security policies in the collection, use, and storage of client information.
Analysis and assessment of all enquiries and requests for business management support based on the sectoral best practices for business operators, as well as the applicable legislation in effect for the business or industry. Referral to appropriate partners when considered necessary.
Facilitation of sound decision making for entrepreneurs by encouraging completion of necessary due diligence and analysis; researching of applicable legislation and industry performance norms.
Evaluation of the performance of businesses which have requested assistance from the organization (Both in the past and currently), including on-site reviews, reporting on those evaluations to the General Manager and documenting appropriately.
Delivery of business training seminars, either in-person or virtually, on a regularly scheduled basis (weekly), to increase knowledge of local entrepreneurs on business related subjects, current business environmental concerns, or trend. Engagement of local subject matter experts is encouraged where appropriate. Measurement and evaluation of workshop using attendee feedback with the feedback used in planning for future events.
Post-secondary degree/diploma in business, finance or other related discipline
Two to five years’ experience providing business advice and/or counselling
Experience cultivating referrals and marketing services in a performance-based environment
Accounting and financial knowledge, with experience performing financial statement analysis
Strong communication skills, including experience delivering presentations
Experience and skills in business management
Knowledge of the needs of businesses, services available locally, and legislation affecting them
Working knowledge of MS Office, including e-mail, internet, client management software and systems, MS Teams and Zoom
Valid drivers’ license, access to a reliable vehicle, and the ability to work flexible hours required.
Contract length: 12 months

Salary: $55,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
