 Primary purpose

The role of Cook is imperative to all routines and schedules and to the flow of the Centre. The Cook contributes to the routines of the day and to the health and well-being of the children through precision in meal planning, delivery and preparation. The Cook prepares lunches and snacks based upon Canada’s Food Guidelines and safe food handling practices for approximately 60 to 65 children (with age ranges between infant to four years), plus snacks for up to 55 school age children on a daily basis.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepares all food while following Canada’s Food Guidelines.
  • Ensures that food meets all prescribed standards.
  • Considers child allergies and other special circumstances of children enrolled in the program when planning the menus with great caution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares food in the kitchen at the Sombra Site, divides proper amounts between the three sites according to the Menu Planning Forms.
  • Records the temperatures of each container of prepared food prior to leaving the Sombra Site for food delivery.
  • Transports hot food in the amber or stainless-steel food transport containers. These containers will be placed in the insulated bags to keep the temperature appropriate. Transports cold food items in coolers.
  • Plans weekly menus (on a three-week rotation basis with slight modification as appropriate, to be approved by the Manager) within approved budget allocations.
  • Plans and prepares menus for special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, picnics, etc.
  • Orders food with approved suppliers and receives and inspects foods and validates against invoices. Shops for weekly food items not purchased through suppliers.
  • Reports any and all concerns regarding kitchen equipment maintenance to the Manager.
  • Communicates well with staff, children, Health Inspectors and MCSS Program Advisors.
  • Cleans and disinfects work area to ensure that the kitchen, equipment and appliances are kept in a clean, orderly and hygienic condition while following all Public Health Standards.
  • Washes all dishes with either commercial dishwasher or the three-sink method to wash dishes and utensils.
  • Uses oven cleaner, germicides, bleaches and other associated products as required.
  • Cleans and organizes storage areas and refrigerators, labels food with date received to ensure that it is used within the appropriate time.
  • Position is supervised by the Manager.

Required qualifications

  • Current Food Handler CertificationCPR and vulnerable
  • General vocational knowledge and skills.
  • Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen. This must be completed every five years and a yearly offence declaration form completed.
  • CPR and First Aid-Infant /Child
  •  Adult Health Assessment including current immunizations.
  • Valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and proof of insurance


  • One or more years of previous work experience in Food Service and/or food handling industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in institutional food preparation.
  • Training in nutrition, dietary, menu planning and food preparation.
  • Experience with Inventory control, ordering and purchasing.

Physical Demands

  • Continually standing up to 5 hours.
  • Lifting heavy, dangerous commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Lifting bins of dishes and bags of food when transporting.
  • Exposure to the elements when transporting food, physical movement required getting in and out of the car and lifting food into and out of the car and delivering to specified sites.
  • Works with exposure to extreme heat and cold.

Working Environment

Coordinates the food preparation and delivery process. Works with precision to daily schedule following all timelines to deliver foods for all three sites.
